Mt Messenger – new Bridge on the way to the southern section of the new bypass.
We’ve brought in the heavies to haul large girders being used for the new 125-metre bridge in the southern section of the Mt Messenger Bypass on State Highway 3 in North Taranaki.
The first truck carries 2 x 24-metre-long girders, while the second carries another 2 girders measuring 18 metres each. Combined, the 2 trucks transported just over 92 tonnes of weathering steel destined for the new bridge. And there’s more to come, with a further 6 girders still to arrive at site.
A lot of logistical planning goes into transporting loads like this across the country, with many moving parts. Aside from the 2 trucks carrying the girders, 5 pilot vehicles were used to alert traffic and help navigate winding routes safely. Over dimensional loads use a permitting process to prioritise travel during times of the day when traffic demand is lowest, reducing disruption for others using the road.
