Ohawe Beach Tragedy 1974

This monument just above Ohawe Beach remembers a very sad boating tragedy. It was a boat fishing tragedy whereby local PE instructor at Hawera High School Wally Hawe and friends never returned from a fishing trip off the Ohawe beach on board Wally’s recreational boat the “Fidelis”. Many of us scaled the beach for days searching for bodies and any wreckage. Unfortunately all of the men were lost and none were found.
