The iron barque Lizzie Bell was wrecked on the Waimate Reef (also referred to as Wharanaki Reef) south of the Oeo River in South Taranaki on July 24, 1901, resulting in the tragic loss of 12 of its 18 crew members. The video is a part dramatization and the fourth episode of a series on Taranaki history which was made as pilot program by TV7 to enable it to make a 12-part series on Taranaki History. The series was never made due to insufficient funding however the first 4 parts were produced.
