Trams to Pungarehu and Bell Block 1950’s – VIDEO

Description

Trams to Pungarehu and Bell Block

This black and white amateur home movie is part of the Caleb Wyatt collection.

Decommissioned New Plymouth Tramways trams being transported on trucks to private owners. Trucks carrying two trams (number 4 and 5) drive through the countryside, crossing Oakura bridge…and through a herd of cattle on the road.

The number 5 drives through Pungarehu on a Bedford semi-trailer truck. A horse-drawn cart with cans of milk drives past. A Swanson Engineering crane truck unloads the number 4 tram in a paddock at Puniho.

Two boys watch the situation from the top of a haystack. A woman provides tea for the men. Tram number 1 on the back of a truck crosses the Waiwhakaiho Bridge at Fitzroy, followed by the crane truck. Some trees are felled to allow the truck through into the paddock at Bell Block. The tram is lowered to the ground in a paddock beside a house.
