A walk through old South Taranaki PĀ’s with a Maori Descendant                                                       

Whakapaiho pa and Otoia pa are located across a gully not far from each other in the Kakaramea region and beside the Patea River on the north side. Not much is known of Whakapaiho pa but early newspaper reports in 1865 claim Whakapaiho is where Charles Broughton was killed, after finding his horse in this area, although other accounts claim another area. Both Otoia pa and Whakapaiho pa were attacked in May 1865 by Major Von Tempsky and his Bush Rangers with some Waikato Militia and only a few months after the battle of Te Ngaio in March 1865. On the occasion of the first attack, Major Von Tempsky managed to find his way to Otoia pa and Whakapaiho pa, after following tracks.

The ancient fortress of Otautu can also be seen in the video and is across the river not far from Otoia and is from a much older era with no known recorded history.   filmed in 2020
